RAHS Class of 2024 Commencement

Families and students from Rosemary Anderson High School gathered at the Portland State University campus on a bright and bustling Saturday in early June. The class of 2024, along with their teachers and staff, met in the PSU Viking Pavillion, the largest venue ever used for a Rosemary Anderson graduation. Pride and camaraderie filled the air, in sweet anticipation of finally turning the tassel and receiving that hard-fought diploma. The arena resonated with cheers, applause, and joyous celebration from loved ones, thrilled to see students reach this milestone.

After beginning with β€˜Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing’ and heartfelt speeches from RAHS Principals, Aysiah Summers, a graduating Rosemary Anderson High School North Campus senior, stepped up to the podium, weighed with nerves and excitement. The speech was her moment to share her journey. Aysiah began her speech after reassurance from the crowd and Principal Damon Hickock by acknowledging the immense emotional rollercoaster she had endured to reach this milestone. She spoke about the challenges she faced, both academically and personally, and how there were moments when giving up seemed like the only option. Through it all, she emphasized how crucial the support from the staff at RAHS had been in keeping her going. Her voice cracked with emotion as she recounted instances where teachers and counselors had gone above and beyond to believe in her, to guide her, and to provide the encouragement she needed to keep moving forward. Aysiah expressed profound gratitude for their unwavering support, describing them as her pillars of strength throughout her high school journey. As she concluded her speech, a wave of applause followed. Cheers not just for her words but for the spirit she exemplifiedβ€”an embodiment of overcoming obstacles and embracing success against all odds.

Dr. Charlene Williams, former RAHS teacher, esteemed educator, and now Director of the Oregon Department of Education, stood tall at the podium and gave the students empowering words of knowledge and wisdom through her commencement speech. She recounted her journey from the classrooms of RAHS to her current position of influence, emphasizing the importance of perseverance, resilience, and unwavering dedication to one’s goals and the want for change.

As the ceremony unfolded, tears flowed freely among the graduates, their families, and staff. These were more than just tears of joy; they were tangible evidence of countless hurdles, moments of doubt overcome, and challenges met with determination. Each drop trickling down their cheeks symbolized their shared journey, a collective release as powerful as a wave crashing onto the shore.

The graduation ceremony for the class of 2024 was more than just a celebration of academic accomplishments. It served as a reminder that despite adversity, hope prevails, and dreams are within reach.
